field of Economic Development. Many special issues arise relating
to reservations' status as sovereign nations. This page serves as
a basic introduction to these issues as well as some current topics and

Economic Development entails any activity seeking
to improve economic opportunities for a given population. This includes
a broad range of activities including the recruitment of employers and
the necessary physical improvements to make a specific area an attractive
place for development.
Indian Reservations desperately need economic
development. Of the more than 900,000 residents of reservations,
about 37 percent are unemployed. On some reservations, the unemployment
rate exceeds 60 percent. Clearly, something must be done, but what
should it be?
